Why Nintendo Tried to Ban the Game Genie: The $60 Cheat Device That Beat Nintendo in Court
In 1990, Nintendo got a court to block the Game Genie from being sold in the United States, and for almost a year it worked. Nintendo said the little gold cartridge put its whole business at risk. Galoob said that if you bought the game, you could play it however you wanted. In 1991, a federal judge agreed with Galoob, and Nintendo ended up paying $15 million. This is the story of the British brothers behind it, how it actually changed a game without touching the cartridge, and why the case still matters every time someone tinkers with something they own.
