The entire history of the Ottoman Empire, from Osman's frontier village around 1300 to the last sultan's exit in 1922, in 22 minutes.
In November 1922, the 36th Ottoman sultan left Istanbul in the rain, escorted by a British ambulance, and refused to take the holiest relics in his care. Six centuries earlier, his family owned little more than a village on a frontier. In between, they took Constantinople, ruled Mecca and Medina, and twice marched on Vienna.
Inside: Osman and the dream of the tree, Bursa and Gallipoli, the Janissaries and the devshirme, the Battle of Kosovo, Bayezid the Thunderbolt and Timur at Ankara, Mehmed the Conqueror and the fall of Constantinople in 1453, ships dragged over a hill, Selim the Grim, Suleiman the Magnificent, Mimar Sinan and Hürrem Sultan, Lepanto and "an arm and a beard", the Sultanate of Women, Vienna 1683, the end of the Janissaries in 1826, the Tanzimat, "the sick man of Europe", the Young Turks, Gallipoli 1915 and Mustafa Kemal, Sèvres, Sakarya and Lausanne — and the three things the empire left behind.
Was it really three hundred years of decline after Suleiman, or an empire that kept changing? Make your case in the comments.
