One Finger, No Hit Surtr (La-Mulana 2 PC)

Boss: Surtr Intended Order: 7 Order Fought: 5 Attempts: 305 (Rank 1/10) Welcome to the test of micromanagement. There is a lot going on in this fight so I’m going to break it down piece by piece. Surtr will perform 3 attacks and then move off screen and punch from one side. For the 3 attacks, your position determines which attack is performed. If you are in the center of the screen when he selects his next attack, it is guaranteed to be the fire drool which leaves him vulnerable. If you are to the side you have to deal with hand swipes that break the ground and give you no chance to deal damage. If you are really out of position, Surtr smacks the wall and causes a million rocks to fall. Don’t let him do that. When Surtr does the fire drool, dealing too much damage causes him to retreat and act randomly. This is bad, so we deal very specific amounts of damage on Surtr’s first 2 attacks to avoid this, and then the same pattern followed by an Axe hit on Surtr’s 3rd attack to deal as much damage as possible when we can guarantee he will go to the side. Be aware that every rock in the arena can be broken by you, including the ground you stand on. This also means we can break the falling rocks with the overhead swing portion of our whip attack. This is important as falling rocks are guaranteed during the side punch. Don’t spend too long next to his face after the punch as he retracts his arm faster than his face and you will take contact damage. Also, be aware that during the pinch phase at the end of the fight, Surtr can punch twice in a row. All in all, a very difficult and exhausting fight with lots of unavoidable damage from bad falling rock luck to deal with. We will use the flame torc to continue our exploration and acquire the Angel Shield, which will be used to humorous effect when we fight Aten-Ra next.
