One Burmese Lady Changed Our First Night in Mae Hong Son

Today we are arriving in Mae Hong Son, Thailand! We jumped on the public bus from Mae Sariang and made our way further north through one of our favourite parts of Thailand. First job was checking into our new budget resort, and honestly, it was absolute quality. Super green, really peaceful and somehow full of chickens. After dropping our bags, we headed out for a little wander around Mae Hong Son to get some first impressions of the town. We checked out Nong Chong Kham Lake before walking over to Wat Chong Kham and Wat Chong Klang. Wat Chong Kham dates back to 1827 and is considered the oldest temple in Mae Hong Son Province, so not a bad place to start exploring. Then obviously, it was time to find some food. If you have been following the trip, you will know we have been travelling really close to the Myanmar border through places like Mae Sot, Mae Sariang and now Mae Hong Son, which means Burmese food is much more common here than in many other parts of Thailand. And this is where the day got really good. While wandering around looking for somewhere to eat, we stumbled across an incredible little Burmese home kitchen. The lady welcomed us straight in and cooked us some absolutely amazing Myanmar food. We tried Lahpet Thoke, the famous Burmese fermented tea leaf salad, Kyet Thar Thoke, a Burmese chicken salad, and Nan Gyi Thoke, a thick rice noodle dish served with chicken curry. Some of the food we had tried before, some of it was completely new, but all of it was incredible. This is exactly why we love travelling through places like Mae Hong Son. You can just go for a walk, have no real plan and suddenly end up eating homemade Burmese food in someone’s little kitchen. And of course, we finished the night with a classic banana roti. Not a bad first day in Mae Hong Son at all. I hope you all like it!
