Kanjavec & The Seven Lakes Valley: The Ultimate High-Alpine Loop in Slovenia 🏔️🌲
This high-alpine trek is widely considered one of the most beautiful—if not the single most beautiful—mountain loop in Slovenia. It seamlessly connects idyllic Bohinj alpine pastures, rugged high-altitude karst terrain, emerald glacial lakes, and a majestic peak towering above 2,500 meters. The scenery changes constantly, shifting from lush green meadows to a raw, moon-like mountain landscape. ✨
🗺️ Route Breakdown:
☀️ Day 1 (Into the Heart of the Alps):
📍 Starting from Planina Blato, the trail heads past Planina pri Jezeru, through Dedno polje and Planina Ovčarija, leading straight into the fairy-tale Seven Lakes Valley. After a stop at the Triglav Lakes Hut (Double Lake), a long, scenic ascent follows through the entire valley, passing the iconic Kidney Lake (Jezero v Ledvicah) all the way up to the summit of Kanjavec (2,568 m). The day ends with a descent to the Zasavska Hut on Prehodavci for an unforgettable night above 2,000 meters. Estimated Hiking Time: 7.5 – 9 hours of active walking. 🥾
🌅 Day 2 (The Wild and Quiet Return):
📍 The next morning, the trail turns east across the Vrata Saddle (Sedlo Vrata) and descends through the peaceful, solitary, and highly scenic Za Kopico Valley. A less-traveled, quiet alternative to the main hiking highways, enchanting hikers with its raw wilderness and peaceful atmosphere. This trail leads back to Dedno polje, followed by a final return past Planina pri Jezeru to the starting point. Estimated Hiking Time: 4.5 – 5.5 hours of mostly downhill and valley walking. 🥾
This two-day loop is the perfect choice for anyone looking to experience Triglav National Park in all its magnificent glory.
📊 Trail Stats & Difficulty:
📐 Total Distance: Approx. 28 – 30 km (full 2-day loop)
📈 Total Vertical Gain: Around 1,700 meters of climbing
🪵 Difficulty: Technically intermediate (mostly walking on steep mountain trails with some rugged karst terrain near the top), but physically demanding due to the length and elevation.
