EP.12 Covert Recon Turns Into a 7-Ship Killing Spree | HMAS Orion | Sea Power

In this episode of Sea Power: Naval Combat in the Missile Age, we take command of the Australian Oberon-class submarine HMAS Orion (S61) for the Pathfinders mission in the Pacific Strike ’85 campaign. Our orders are to proceed north from Sandakan and conduct a covert reconnaissance of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, where enemy forces have established a major foothold. Before the amphibious assault force can move in, we need to positively identify several key coastal installations—including the SA-10 battery at Antonio Bautista Air Base and multiple Silkworm anti-ship missile sites guarding the approaches. The mission is supposed to be reconnaissance first and combat only when necessary, but operating this close to hostile territory quickly becomes dangerous. Enemy patrol craft, frigates, and submarines stand between Orion and her reconnaissance objectives, forcing us to balance stealth, intelligence gathering, and torpedo attacks while trying to keep the submarine undetected.
