Japan built one of the most ambitious coastal defense systems on Earth — a massive network of seawalls stretching roughly 400 kilometers along the northeastern coast.
But this wall was not designed simply to “stop” a tsunami.
After the catastrophic March 11, 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami destroyed coastal defenses across Japan, engineers faced a much harder question: How do you build a structure that can survive an enormous tsunami, slow the incoming water, reduce its destructive power, and give people more time to escape?
In this documentary, we go inside the engineering and construction process behind Japan’s massive tsunami defense system.
You’ll see how engineers studied the failures of older seawalls, designed new coastal defenses, engineered foundations in difficult seabed conditions, built massive rubble foundations, installed steel sheet piles, compacted reinforced earth, placed huge concrete panels, sealed joints, constructed floodgates, reinforced cliff sections, installed offshore breakwaters, and added massive concrete armor units designed to dissipate wave energy.
The most important detail is that the wall was never intended to be an unstoppable barrier against every possible tsunami. Its purpose is to reduce the impact, slow the water, protect communities, and — most importantly — buy valuable time for evacuation.
From the first foundation work to the final protective layers, this is the full engineering story behind Japan’s extraordinary coastal defense project.

💬 QUESTION FOR YOU:
Do you think Japan made the right decision building such massive tsunami defenses — or should more money have been invested in evacuation systems and relocating communities to higher ground?
