Dame Shirley Bassey's 60th birthday special, titled "Happy Birthday Shirley!", aired in the United Kingdom on January 11, 1997, on London Weekend Television (LWT). This TV Special was hosted by Jimmy Tarbuck, with guest appearances and tributes from figures like Lionel Blair and Tom Jones (who joined in singing "Happy Birthday" during the finale). This TV Special was a concert extravaganza recorded in front of an invited audience seated at tables with a full orchestra. This is clip, Shirley performs the song, "Try a Little Tenderness". She recorded and released this song on her 1995 album titled, "Shirley Bassey Sings The Movies". ABOUT This Song: "Try a Little Tenderness" is a song written by Harry M. Woods (music), Jimmy Campbell and Reg Connelly (lyrics). It was first recorded on December 8, 1932, by the Ray Noble Orchestra, with vocals by Val Rosing. Another version, also recorded in 1932, was made by Charlie Palloy & his Orchestra. Ted Lewis (Columbia 2748 D) and Ruth Etting (Melotone 12625) had hits with it in 1933. Bing Crosby also recorded it on January 9, 1933, for Brunswick Records. A version by Bob and Alf Pearson was also released in 1933. The song appeared on Frank Sinatra's debut album, The Voice of Frank Sinatra, in 1946 and on the 1960 album Nice 'n' Easy. A popular version in an entirely new form was recorded by soul artist Otis Redding in 1966 LYRICS: In the bustle of today We're all inclined to miss Little things that mean so much A word, a smile, a kiss When a woman loves a man He's a hero in her eyes And a hero he can always be If he'll just realize She may be weary, women do got weary Wearing the same shabby dress And when she's weary Try a little tenderness You know she's the waiting just anticipating Things she may never possess While she's without them Try a little tenderness It's not just sentimental She has her grief and care And a word that soft and gentle Makes it easier to bear You won't regret it, woman don't forget it Love is their whole happiness It's oh, so easy Try a little tenderness It's oh, so easy Try a little tenderness It's oh, so easy Try a little tenderness
