NASSAU, Bahamas — UConn women’s basketball put together two dominant wins in the Bahamas this week at the Baha Mar Women’s Championship. And not only did it play selfless basketball in each of the 40-minute games, but the Huskies adapted to their opponent and rose up each time thanks to veteran leadership and unwavering defense. Azzi Fudd reminded the world why she’s so much more than just a 3-point threat. UConn’s frontcourt showed that despite its youth and inexperience, it can hang with bigger opponents and contribute on bends of the floor. Paige Bueckers excelled despite taking the majority of the physicality each game. Geno Auriemma said these early season Thanksgiving tournaments on the road help show the Huskies’ head coach the identity of his team. However, this week he learned his team can win with multiple approaches. They ca.n bend without breaking and mold to whatever each game requires. While he was impressed with about 60 of those 80 minutes on the court, Auriemma is pleased with where his team is at as it heads into a tough December of non-conference matchups. “You have to be able to play a different game every night and play the game that's called for that night,” he said Wednesday. “You can't say, ‘This is who we are. This is how we're going to play.’ No, you can't do that. You have to say, ‘I want to play this way. But at the same time, the game is going to dictate how you're going to have to win tonight.’ And I'm glad that we solved that this early in the season and that we can do that.” The Huskies return Saturday from their seven-day trip to the Bahamas and begin preparations for facing Holy Cross on Tuesday in Storrs. But leaning on what they learned in the Caribbean will only help as they face four Top 25 opponents in the next three weeks, including a Dec. 12 meeting against longtime rival Notre Dame in South Bend.
