Spyway Barn to Dancing Ledge | A Coastal Walk on the Jurassic Coast, Dorset
Join me on a walk from Spyway Barn down to Dancing Ledge on the beautiful Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. This route takes us across open fields and down the hillside to one of the most distinctive spots along the Jurassic Coast, with dramatic limestone cliffs, rugged rock formations and views out across the English Channel.
Dancing Ledge has a fascinating history. The cliffs here were extensively quarried for Purbeck and Portland limestone, with stone used in building projects and sea defences. Quarrying continued into the early 20th century, leaving behind the distinctive stepped rock faces and broad ledge we see today.
One of Dancing Ledge's most unusual features is its rock-cut tidal swimming pool. It was created for boys from Durnford Preparatory School and was already marked on maps by 1928. Today, the pool and surrounding rocks are reminders of the area's past, while the ledge itself attracts walkers, photographers, climbers and visitors looking for a spectacular coastal setting.
The walk from Spyway Barn is a lovely way to experience this part of the Jurassic Coast. The final descent is steep and can be slippery in wet weather, so sturdy footwear and care are essential. The rocks can also be hazardous in rough seas, and swimming is at your own risk.
