Daniel Hulme did his A levels under a desk in the Morecambe hotel restaurant he was running at 16, after being actively discouraged from applying to university. He went on to UCL, founded Satalia (acquired by WPP, where he is now Chief AI Officer), founded the machine consciousness company Conscium, and ran a master's programme at UCL. Matt and Al ask him whether the traditional education pathway is still an honest transaction, why foundational knowledge like computational complexity still matters when everyone's rebranded as an AI expert, and why AI agents are stuck in what Dan Ariely called the 'teenage sex phase': everyone says they're doing it, almost nobody is. Then it gets big: LLMs as 'intoxicated graduates' heading for professor level, brains that run on 20 watts, evolving digital creatures in a virtual petri dish, the colour-wheel theory of consciousness, the seven singularities, and whether a machine that understands pain and empathy would be safer than a zombie superintelligence. Plus what education should test when knowledge is free, and whether AI narrows or widens the disadvantage gap. Daniel's new book, Perspectives on Machine Consciousness, is out in the coming months.
