That means it belongs to the same family as beans, lentils, and peas, and it grows nothing like a tree nut does. The plant flowers above the ground like any normal crop. But once it's pollinated, something strange happens. The stem bends downward and physically buries the young pod into the soil, where it finishes growing underground, completely out of sight. Hence, its old-fashioned nickname, the "groundnut.” This rare biological process is called geocarpy.
