Hotels cut room rates 7.4% in August and occupancy still fell. Here's what that one number says about where Vegas is headed. In 2025, Las Vegas lost roughly 3.2 million visitors. Outside the pandemic, it was the steepest annual drop the city has ever recorded. The tourism authority forecast a modest rebound for 2026. The newest LVCVA report, the latest Nevada gaming figures and passenger counts from Harry Reid International Airport show something else. I pulled six numbers from those reports, and together they show a slump that has turned into the city's new normal. We'll look at the recovery that never showed up, the midweek hotel rooms sitting nearly a third empty, and RevPAR falling to about $111 a night. We'll also look at the airport's long run of passenger declines and what the Spirit Airlines shutdown did to cheap flights into town. One of the six numbers is actually going up, and it's the most disturbing one on the list. Then we'll go to what Las Vegas is building while all this happens: Hard Rock's guitar-shaped tower going up where the Mirage stood, and the old Tropicana site, now cleared for an Athletics baseball stadium. Those projects show who the Strip is being built for now, and who's being left out.
