15 hardware store brands every American dad trusted, and what happened to the companies behind them.
From Disston saws and Plumb hammers to Yankee screwdrivers, Millers Falls drills and Keen Kutter tools, these were the names stamped into the steel in your father's toolbox.
The tools are still in garages all over the country. Most of the companies that made them are gone.
In this documentary we count down 15 vintage American tool and hardware brands, how each one was built, and how it ended: family firms sold to conglomerates, factories closed or moved, and famous Made in USA names that survive today only as a label.
Which of these brands is still in your family's toolbox? And which one did we leave out? Tell us in the comments. Subscribe to America Built & Lost for new documentaries on the companies, factories and brands that built the American middle class.
Next episode: the American kitchen brands that were built to last a lifetime. This episode was researched and written by our team using public historical sources. Some visuals are illustrative recreations.
