On the Ground at the 2026 Greek Independence Day Parade in New York

The Greek Independence Day Parade returned to Fifth Avenue in New York City on Sunday, April 26, 2026, marching along its familiar route between 61st and 74th Streets in a celebration organized by the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York. This year carried extra weight: the parade marked both the 205th anniversary of Greek independence and the 250th anniversary of American independence, a dual milestone that gave the day an especially patriotic charge. This year's grand marshals were John A. Catsimatidis, Chairman and CEO of Red Apple Group, and Nicholas Tsakos, founder and CEO of Tsakos Energy Navigation. More than 110 community groups took part, from the Evzones of the Presidential Guard marching in their ceremonial step to traditional dancers in regional costume and floats decorated in blue and white down the length of the avenue. Favorable weather brought out families and spectators lining the sidewalks with flags in hand, and the atmosphere lived up to the occasion — a genuinely electric sense of unity that made covering this year's parade a memorable experience, patriotic and joyful from start to finish.
