Canyon Lake in Arizona will close completely to the public starting September 8, 2026, for a major 16-week dam maintenance and water drawdown project.
September 8, 2026: closes the entire lake, including all boat ramps, hiking trails, and public access points.
September 16, 2026: The water drawdown officially begins.
Project Duration: Lasts for roughly 16 weeks, with the lake expected to reopen once refilling completes. [1, 2, 3]
Project Details
Water Drop: The water level will drop by 54 feet to expose underwater equipment on the Mormon Flat and Horse Mesa dams. [4, 5]
Work Phases: It takes 4 weeks to lower the lake, 8 weeks to perform safety inspections and maintenance, and 4 weeks to refill it using upstream water. [4]
Frequency: The [Salt River Project (SRP)](https://www.srpnet.com/grid-water-man...) and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation perform this major maintenance cycle only once every 20 years. [4, 6]
