At two in the morning I smelled hot plastic. The power strip behind my grandson's bed was too hot to hold, and his quilt was hanging a foot from a brand-new 1,500-watt heater. Nothing burned that night. Here is what I learned since, checked against the fire safety numbers. In this video: • Why space heaters start a minority of home heating fires but are behind most of the deaths (NFPA) • Why the hours between midnight and 8 a.m. are so deadly • The 3-foot rule, and why your bed and couch are the real fuel • The simple arithmetic of why a power strip can overheat under one heater • 3 myths: the tip-over switch, "newer heaters can't start fires," and the heavy-duty extension cord • My grandfather's one-sentence rule about fire, and the old farmhouse habits that still apply • What a night of heater use really costs Tonight's homework: walk your house and look behind every bed and couch. If a heater is plugged into a power strip or an extension cord, plug it straight into the wall. What was the fire rule in your house growing up? And where do you live? Tell me in the comments. If I get something wrong, I'll pin the correction at the top of the comments. General safety information only. If a plug, outlet or cord ever feels hot, or you see brown marks or melted plastic, stop using it and call a licensed electrician. If you burn fuel indoors, use a carbon monoxide alarm. In a fire, get out and call 911 from outside. #SpaceHeater #FireSafety #Homesteading
