If you live somewhere the sun comes up late in winter, you know the feeling:
the alarm goes off in the dark, and it's still dark when you leave the house.
The usual advice is to drink more coffee.
So here's the thing about that. The Nordic countries drink more coffee than
anyone on earth — Finland is number one, around twelve to thirteen kilos per
person per year. If coffee fixed dark mornings, they'd have fixed it. They
drink the most and they still needed everything else in this video.
Five habits from places where the sun genuinely doesn't rise for weeks. And
one of them isn't a habit at all — it's a piece of infrastructure, and it
might be the most useful thing here.
A few things I try to be honest about: the "winter mindset" research is a
correlation, not a cure, and seasonal depression is a real condition that
needs real treatment. Denmark burns more candles than any country in Europe —
and Danish research finds candles are the single biggest source of ultrafine
particle pollution inside Danish homes. And the reason Danes keep cycling
through winter isn't grit: when it snows in Copenhagen, the bike lanes are
cleared before the roads.
