Sail On, Brendan
Where the western waters wander,
Where the evening meets the foam,
Brendan heard the ocean calling:
“Leave the shore and sail from home.”
From Ireland’s green and ancient shore,
He faced the wild Atlantic roar,
With timber, hide and faithful crew,
He sailed beneath a heaven of blue.
No golden crown, no king’s command,
But faith to seek a distant land,
Through silver mist and winter rain,
They crossed the dark and restless main.
Follow the stars, follow the light,
Through the waves and through the night.
Sail on, Brendan, sail away,
Beyond the edge of breaking day,
Where no familiar harbour lies,
Only the sea and endless skies.
Sail on, Brendan, brave and true,
Through Atlantic grey and blue,
And when the western stars appear,
Let faith be stronger than your fear.
They heard the seabirds in the dawn,
Then watched the distant coastlines form,
Through islands wrapped in emerald haze,
Through ocean nights and golden days.
The ancient stories still remain
Of unknown shores beyond the rain,
Of promised lands across the foam,
And sailors dreaming far from home.
Ring the bell and raise the sail,
Morning follows every gale.
Sail on, Brendan, sail away,
Beyond the edge of breaking day,
Where no familiar harbour lies,
Only the sea and endless skies.
Sail on, Brendan, brave and true,
Through Atlantic grey and blue,
And when the western stars appear,
Let faith be stronger than your fear.
Was it a vision? Was it a shore?
A sailor’s tale forevermore?
The ocean keeps what none can know,
Beneath the tides that come and go.
Sail on, Brendan, sail away,
Into the gold of rising day,
Across the waves, beneath the sky,
Where ancient winds and seabirds fly.
Sail on, Brendan, through the foam,
Far from Ireland, far from home,
And though a thousand years may be,
Your legend sails the western sea.
Beyond the western sea…
Beyond the setting sun…
The old bell calls…
And the voyage carries on.
