Crushed in 127 Minutes — The Only Photographs Ever Taken on Venus

...Only a handful of photographs have ever been taken on the surface of Venus, and every one came from a Soviet lander that was failing as it worked. Before 1962, Venus was imagined as Earth's warm, wet twin. The Soviet Venera program spent two decades proving otherwise, building each new lander for the planet the previous probe had described, only to find it worse. Venera 9, 10, 13 and 14 survived long enough to send back a handful of images before the heat and pressure ended them. Those pictures, together with Pioneer Venus, the Vega balloons and Magellan's radar maps, turned Venus into the clearest known case of a runaway greenhouse: a sister planet that likely lost its oceans to space. NASA's DAVINCI mission is set to take the first new surface photographs in over forty years.
