More than 1,100 years after his death, one of Japan’s most revered Buddhist monks is still believed to be meditating deep inside a sacred mountain. His name was Kukai, also known as Kobo Daishi — the founder of Shingon Buddhism and the spiritual figure at the heart of Mount Koya. According to the tradition preserved at Koyasan, Kukai did not simply die in 835. He entered a profound state of meditation known as nyujo. And even today, monks continue to treat his mausoleum at Okunoin as a place where Kukai remains spiritually present. But what is history? What is religious tradition? And why has this extraordinary belief survived for more than a thousand years? 0:00 The Mystery of Kukai and Mount Koya 0:44 Two Ways to Understand the Story: History vs. Faith 1:23 Who Was Kukai? We will explore Kukai's journey to Tang Dynasty China, the founding of Mount Koya, his final years, the legend surrounding his death, and the centuries-old belief that Kobo Daishi continues to meditate at Okunoin. There is no scientific evidence that Kukai's physical body has remained alive for 1,100 years. But the belief itself is historically significant — and its survival tells us something fascinating about Japanese Buddhism, death, enlightenment, and the idea that a spiritual teacher may never truly leave. The deeper you enter the forest, the stranger the story becomes.
