The moth asks the candle why it weeps and burns. The candle’s answer becomes a searching meditation on love, patience and surrender.
This English reading presents Saadi’s dialogue from the third chapter of the Bustan, or Orchard. Its flame illuminates the difference between claiming to love and enduring love’s demands.
Source: Saadi, Bustan, chapter III, the passage beginning “One night, I remember, my eyes did not sleep.”
The burning and death imagery belongs to the poem’s mystical language of devotion and the surrender of self-interest.
