Surveyor Nira Voss has forty-eight hours of oxygen left and a crashed ship in pieces across two kilometers of alien valley. She climbs a ridge looking for her emergency beacon. She doesn't find the beacon. She finds a city. Nobody built cities on this planet. The survey database says it's uninhabited. The city is old enough that the structures have taken on the color of the rock around them, low and wide and built in a geometry that no human architect ever drew. And somewhere deep inside it, something is broadcasting a signal on a frequency her suit can receive. She has forty-eight hours of oxygen. The beacon is in the wrong direction. The city is between her and where she needs to go. She goes through it. What she finds inside changes everything the settled systems thought they knew about the outer territories.
