BALKAN MOTOADVENTURE, DAY 9, LAKE KOMAN FERRY

My motorcycle journey across Lake Koman on the local ferry was an epic, beautifully chaotic three-hour voyage through northern Albania's most massive river gorges. The adventure started with absolute chaos at the Koman Dam. After surviving the rough, pothole-ridden mountain road on my bike, I was pushed into a mad scramble at the dock—a loud, disorganised squeeze of shouting deckhands, backpackers, and cars. I watched anxiously as they packed the ferry to absolute maximum capacity, wedging my motorcycle tight against the metal hull with barely an inch to spare. Once we cast off, the frenzy instantly vanished into pure wonder. The water turned a striking emerald green, reflecting sheer limestone cliffs that rose hundreds of meters straight out of the canyon. I spent the next three hours on the deck right next to my bike, completely mesmerised as we squeezed through narrow canyons resembling Norwegian fjords and made brief, erratic stops at roadless shores.
