This production of La fanciulla del West by director Marco Arturo Marelli premiered at the Vienna State Opera in 2013. In this staging, the opera is transferred from the frontier gold diggers’ camp to the present, to the modern-day world of penniless miners earning a pittance and finding out the meaning of life the hard way. Jonas Kaufmann as Dick Johnson is joined by Nina Stemme, who stars as Minnie. The opera is conducted by Franz Welser-Möst.
