What’s hiding under your feet in New York City? Beneath the streets of the Big Apple is a massive underground world of water pipes, electrical cables, steam tunnels, gas lines, sewers, subway tunnels, communication ducts, and some of the largest infrastructure projects in the United States.
This documentary takes you beneath New York City to explore the hidden systems that keep millions of people supplied with water, electricity, heat, transportation, and communication every day. From the underground water mains and electrical grid to Manhattan’s famous steam system, ancient utility lines, massive sewers, and the New York City subway, the city below the streets is almost like a second city.
We’ll also explore why New York has so many underground utilities, why the city's infrastructure became so complicated, how workers repair pipes without damaging nearby systems, why stormwater can overwhelm the sewer network, and how massive projects like City Water Tunnel No. 3 were built deep beneath the city.
The deeper you look, the more surprising New York becomes. What appears to be an ordinary sidewalk may be sitting above a huge network of tunnels, pipes, wires, tracks, and infrastructure built over more than a century.
New York City is more than what you see above ground. There is an entire hidden city beneath your feet.
