The Machine That Ended the Ox Teamster — The Steam Donkey

You hear him before you see anything. A voice somewhere ahead of you in the trees, and it does not stop. Then the road bends, and there are twenty oxen in front of you, yoked in pairs and chained pair to pair, leaning into one log longer than the team and thicker through the middle than a man is tall. There are no reins. There is a pointed stick and his voice, and nothing else. This is the story of the ox teamster — the bullwhacker, the bull puncher — who moved old-growth timber out of the Pacific Northwest before any engine could. The trade existed because of one number: about a mile. That was how far from navigable water an ox team could economically drag a log, and everything outside that circle was worth nothing. It ran on a road built out of trees laid crosswise and kept slippery by a boy with a bucket of grease, and on oxen that needed eight shoes each, two halves to every split hoof. In August 1881, in Eureka, California, John Dolbeer bolted an upright boiler and a rope drum to a sled of logs. It worked — and for almost twenty years it could not finish a pull without a horse to drag the line back. The trade did not end in 1881, and this video does not give you a year, because the record does not have one. The archival record here is thin and this video says so.
