What the Concussion Movie Didn’t Tell You About Mike Webster

Mike Webster was the Steelers' Iron Mike. Here's what the Concussion movie left out of his story. Mike Webster played centre for the Pittsburgh Steelers, started 150 NFL games in a row, won four Super Bowls and went into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In Concussion (2015), Will Smith plays Dr Bennet Omalu, the pathologist who studied Webster's brain; his 2005 paper called it chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. But nearly three years before Webster died, the NFL players' retirement plan, run by former NFL players and owners, had ruled him totally and permanently disabled by head injuries from football, and in May 2000 its director put it in writing. It's the real Mike Webster story, whether you've seen the film or not: Iron Mike, the fall and the truck, the paperwork, the court case the film never shows, what the film gets right and what it adds for drama, the CTE cases that came after him, from Justin Strzelczyk and Dave Duerson to Junior Seau, and who got left out of the NFL concussion settlement money. 📚 Recommended Reading & Watching Material: • Concussion Book by Jeanne Marie Laskas: https://link.amazon/B025GdTv3 • League of Denial Book by Mark Fainaru-Wada and Steve Fainaru: https://link.amazon/B0io50rBD • Truth Doesn't Have a Side Book by Dr. Bennet Omalu: https://link.amazon/B04wCnQNo • League of Denial FRONTLINE Documentary (DVD): https://link.amazon/B0je4iQZP • Concussion Film (Blu-ray): https://link.amazon/B0ePNvnUF • Concussion Film (Prime Video): https://link.amazon/B05HZf9rJ (As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.)
