Digital Tolling & Smarter Road Funding in Africa | Kenya Roads Board Shares Key Insights

How can digital tolling and weighbridge systems contribute to sustainable road funding and better road infrastructure in Africa? In this interview, Eng. Tabitha from the Kenya Roads Board (KRB) shares her experience from the Digitalization of Road Toll and Weighing Systems Training, held at AFRALTI in Nairobi. Eng. Tabitha explains how tolling can provide an alternative source of funding for road maintenance, development and rehabilitation, while digitalized weighing systems can help address vehicle overloading and protect the lifespan of road infrastructure. She also highlights one of the programme’s key practical experiences — a visit to the Nairobi Expressway, where participants were able to connect classroom learning with the practical implementation of modern tolling systems. A key takeaway from the training was that successful digitalization goes beyond implementing technology. It requires an end-to-end approach to service delivery, beginning with a clear understanding of the service and outcomes that road agencies intend to achieve. Eng also shares recommendations for future programmes, including greater focus on legal and regulatory frameworks, data protection, case studies and more in-depth learning sessions.
