She said, "I can't pay you, only feed you." He answered, "I asked God for a home, ma'am. Not a wage."
In September 1886, Clara Prentiss has a meadow of cut timothy, a thirty-ton hay contract, a mercantile bill she can't pay, and no money for help. When a stranger with nothing but a bedroll asks to work for supper and a place to sleep, she writes the terms on the back of a feed receipt: no wages, no debt on either side. Ezra Colton signs it, but he tells her he thinks one word is wrong.
Set on Idaho's Camas Prairie in 1886, this faith-based Christian Western asks what two people owe each other when neither can pay. Drawing on Romans 13:8 — "Owe no man any thing, but to love one another" — it follows a proud woman who has spent her life avoiding every obligation, and a drifter who has spent sixteen years making sure leaving would never hurt.
📌 In this episode, you'll experience:
A strict written agreement that slowly stops being a wall
A man who turns down steady wages because he is looking for a home
A hard November race over a mountain grade with a hay contract and a storm closing in
Warm, cinematic frontier atmosphere with peaceful narration for long-form listening
