A declassified file isn't an answer, it's a lead. The Paper Trail is the method I use to read redactions, trace sources, and catch cover stories in their own paperwork. Ten chapters, one repeatable process. Get it here: https://publy.store/t/Nme5uwB
On the evening of 8 May 1987, an IRA unit from East Tyrone drove a hijacked van and a digger carrying a bomb to the part-time police station at Loughgall, County Armagh. Twenty-four soldiers, later identified as the SAS, and three police officers were already waiting. Eight IRA men were killed, and so was Anthony Hughes, a civilian driving home with his brother Oliver, who was badly wounded.
This documentary reconstructs how the Loughgall ambush unfolded: the station attacks at Ballygawley and the Birches that shaped the IRA's method, the security deployment before dawn, and what British officials privately told the Irish government the warning did and did not include. It follows the afternoon hijackings, the firing, the digger and the explosion as the soldiers' statements describe them, and the white Citroen carrying the Hughes brothers, told through both the soldiers' account and Oliver Hughes's own. It ends with what the investigation, the 1995 inquest and the European Court of Human Rights could and could not establish, the apology to the Hughes family, and the new inquests.
The firing sequence comes from the soldiers' written statements, which were never tested in court. Oliver Hughes's account and the forensic scientist's findings are quoted from the families' campaign. The European Court found a breach of the right to life in how the deaths were investigated; it made no finding on whether the shootings were lawful.
