Historically famous for its fierce 19th-century resistance against British colonial rule, this legendary "warrior village" underwent a profound transformation in 1998 by banning all hunting and commercial logging to protect its rich biodiversity. Today, the community manages the Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary (KNCTS) to protect endangered species like the Blyth’s tragopan, while practicing advanced, sustainable agriculture through ancient hillside terraced farming and the use of nitrogen-fixing alder trees.
