Why should importers conduct regular customs compliance self-assessments?
U.S. import compliance extends far beyond a single customs entry. Importers need to maintain accurate classifications, customs values, country-of-origin determinations, marking, trade remedy treatment, broker instructions, supporting documentation, and required records across both current and historical imports.
A customs self-assessment helps identify potential problems before they become larger compliance issues — and can also uncover missed duty-saving opportunities.
In this video, we explain why importers should periodically review their customs programs, including:
HTSUS classification
Customs valuation
Country of origin and marking
Broker management and entry oversight
Trade remedies and additional tariffs
FTA and special duty program claims
AD/CVD and forced-labor compliance
Customs recordkeeping
Past-entry review and corrective action
Potential missed duty-saving opportunities
If an issue is identified, importers should evaluate the affected entries, timing, liquidation status, and duty impact. Depending on the circumstances, corrective options may include a Post Summary Correction, protest, prior disclosure, or another appropriate mechanism.
A self-assessment is not only about finding mistakes. It can also identify opportunities such as unused preference programs, Chapter 98 provisions, overpaid duties, or other treatments that may improve future import activity.
