What if the way you normally plant a tomato seedling is leaving part of its potential underground?
In this video, I do something that looks completely wrong at first: instead of planting a tomato seedling straight up, I lay part of the stem down in the soil.
Why?
Tomatoes have the unusual ability to develop additional roots along buried portions of their stems. By removing the lower leaves and planting the seedling at an angle, you can give the plant an opportunity to develop a larger root system than it had in its original nursery pot.
But there's an important detail many gardening videos leave out: deeper planting isn't a magic trick, and more buried stem doesn't automatically mean a bigger harvest.
So I put the technique to a real backyard test.
Two tomato seedlings. Same variety. Same bed. Same soil. Same sunlight. Same watering. One was planted conventionally, while the other was planted deeply at an angle.
Then I watched what happened.
🌱 In this video, you'll learn:
• Why tomato stems can develop new roots underground
• How deep or angled tomato planting actually works
• Which leaves should be removed before planting
• Why buried leaves can create problems
• How to avoid leaving air pockets around the buried stem
• Why compacted or poorly draining soil can work against you
• How planting timing differs across different parts of the United States
• Why heat, rainfall, sunlight, soil, and watering still matter
• What happened when two identical tomato plants were compared
• Why a stronger root system doesn't automatically guarantee a bigger harvest
I'll also explain what I believe happened in the side-by-side test—and where the evidence from one growing season has limits.
The goal isn't to convince you that one technique will transform every tomato plant.
It's to help you understand what's happening underneath the soil so you can make better decisions in your own garden.
Because sometimes the biggest gardening lessons aren't hiding in another fertilizer, product, or complicated routine.
They're already built into the plant.
Have you ever planted a tomato deeply or on its side? What happened in your garden?
