In about seven and a half billion years the Sun becomes a red giant and reaches its greatest size. Whether the Earth survives that day has been calculated five separate times since 1993 — and the answer has changed four times.
This is the story of what the Sun actually does to the Earth: the surface that melts before the star ever arrives, the tide that decides whether the planet falls in, the outer moons that get switched on by the same event, and a single grain of zircon in a drawer in Western Australia that is older than every ocean and every continent, and whose fate splits on exactly the same argument as the planet's.
THE TWO PAPERS THAT DISAGREE

It turns on how efficiently a dying Sun sheds mass — a number that has never been measured for our star and is read off other stars. That is the gap the whole film lives inside.
