Marie Antoinette never said "let them eat cake". But France still came to hate her, thanks to one of the strangest scams in history: the Affair of the Diamond Necklace. A penniless countess who gave herself the title, a cardinal desperate for the queen's attention, forged letters signed with the wrong name, a young Parisian woman paid to play the queen in a dark garden, and a necklace of 647 diamonds that simply vanished. The queen never touched it. She got the blame anyway.
