Sonic 1 Sega Pico Edition Development: Joypad Multiplexer and Debugger

A progress update on the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit) game mod called Sonic 1: Pico Edition. In a previous development video (   • Sonic 1 Sega Pico Edition Development: Seg...  ), I mentioned about the implementation of joypad multiplexer code, which allows for any joypad port (Sega Genesis P1, P2, and Genesis EXT ports; Sega Pico internal pad, and Sega Pico EXT port) to control the player. This code is necessary for cross-platform support for running this game on the Sega Genesis, Sega Pico, and Sega Mega Pico platforms, all of this within the same monolithic ROM. In this progress update, I discuss about the inner workings of the joypad multiplexer in detail, and show it off with a joypad debugger in the HUD. The multiplexer code is shown on real hardware with both a Sega Genesis Model 1 (P1, P2, and Genesis EXT ports) and stock Sega Pico Model 2 (Pico internal pad port) consoles. I also unveil my prototype Sega Genesis EXT Port Joypad adapter kit which is in development. This adapter kit allows players to connect joypads to the EXT port for usage as Player 3. The EXT port is found on older Sega Genesis Model 1, JVC Wondermega, and Sega Teradrive consoles. The final kit design after revision will utilize specialty male DE-9 connectors which will fit snugly into the Genesis EXT port without cutting the case.
