In today’s Gospel, Jesus declares that He has come to set the earth on fire and speaks of the division that may arise even within families because of the decision to follow Him. These challenging words reveal that the peace Christ brings is not merely the absence of conflict, but a peace rooted in truth, conversion, and reconciliation with God. The fire of Christ signifies His saving mission, purification, and the transforming power of the Holy Spirit, while His baptism points toward the suffering, Death, and Resurrection through which He accomplishes our redemption. In the light of Saint Paul’s prayer in Ephesians, this reflection invites us to be strengthened inwardly by the Holy Spirit and rooted deeply in the immeasurable love of Christ.
