The Warriors (1979): The Deleted Scenes They Cut From the Movie

What was cut from The Warriors (1979) before audiences ever saw it? Walter Hill’s cult classic follows nine gang members trying to make their way back to Coney Island after being blamed for the murder of a powerful gang leader. But the theatrical film left out scenes that revealed more about its characters, their fears, and the dangerous night ahead. In this documentary, we investigate the deleted scenes of The Warriors, the footage that survived in television versions, and the decisions that shaped the movie we know today. In this video: The deleted daylight opening featuring Cleon and his girlfriend Ajax’s early suspicion that the meeting is a setup The missing portion of Cyrus’s speech The deleted radio announcements revealing the organized hunt The lost moment showing Swan’s guilt The scene where the Warriors consider running near Coney Island Why Thomas G. Waites’s character, Fox, was written out of the story The rival gang called the Dingos that never made it to filming Walter Hill’s original ideas for the movie’s opening What the 2005 Ultimate Director’s Cut restored—and what it left out The story goes beyond deleted footage. We also explore the production decisions, character changes, and release controversies that helped turn The Warriors into a cult classic. One important distinction: not everything missing from the movie was a deleted scene. Some ideas were never filmed, while much of the deleted footage survives through television versions and production accounts. Which missing scene would you most want to see restored? Would the film’s sunrise ending feel different if it had opened with Cleon walking along the Coney Island boardwalk? Share your thoughts in the comments.
