Few visitors know that part of her bow was rebuilt in a Boston dry dock in October 1942, after something happened off the coast of Ireland that the British government kept quiet for the rest of the war. Carrying about 10,000 American soldiers, the Queen Mary had run straight through one of the warships sent to protect her. HMS Curacoa was cut in two and gone within minutes; of her roughly 440 men, 337 did not come home. The liner, under strict orders, never stopped.
