How many people can we lose before the heart becomes afraid to love again?
“HOW MANY GOODBYES CAN A HEART SURVIVE?” is a deeply emotional two-part sung prayer performed by Calvin Reeves for everyone carrying the names, voices and memories of people they can no longer call.
As we grow older, grief does not always arrive only once. We lose parents, siblings, partners, relatives and lifelong friends. Their telephone numbers remain in our contacts. Their birthdays stay written on calendars. Their voices return through old songs—and sometimes an ordinary moment suddenly reminds us that they are gone.
This Southern Soul Gospel experience follows one man as he brings his accumulated grief before God and asks:
“How many goodbyes can one heart survive?”
The complete story unfolds through two connected movements:
00:00 — HOW MANY GOODBYES CAN A HEART SURVIVE?
A spoken and sung prayer about carrying the names of people we have lost, fearing another goodbye and learning that faith does not require us to hide our grief.
05:00 — LOVE DIDN’T LEAVE WITH THEM
The answer begins to rise: death may take someone from our sight, but it cannot erase the love, faith, wisdom and kindness they planted within us.

With Calvin Reeves’ extremely deep, aged and heavily raspy voice, intimate spoken-word prayer, soulful piano, warm Hammond organ, restrained Southern Soul instrumentation and a powerful Black Gospel choir of male and female voices, this work moves from sorrow and unanswered questions toward remembrance, gratitude and Christian hope.
This sung prayer is for anyone who:
• Still has a loved one’s number saved in their telephone
• Hears their voice unexpectedly inside an old song
• Misses a parent, sibling, partner, relative or close friend
• Feels guilty for laughing or living after someone has died
• Wonders whether healing means forgetting
• Believes in God but still struggles with grief
• Needs permission to cry and continue living
Healing does not mean that their absence stops hurting.
Faith does not demand a tearless face.
Sometimes healing means saying their names without apologizing for the tears—and allowing the love they gave us to continue through the lives we choose to live.
They may be gone from where we can see them, but their love did not leave with them.
🙏 Who do you still miss?
Write their first name in the comments if you feel comfortable. Together, we can turn this space into a quiet place of remembrance, prayer and love for the people who helped shape our lives.
