The Babadook (2014) follows Amelia, a widowed mother still struggling with the death of her husband, and her young son Samuel, whose behavior has become increasingly difficult. One night, Samuel finds a mysterious pop-up book titled Mister Babadook. The book tells the story of a shadowy figure that becomes impossible to escape once you know about it, and Samuel quickly becomes convinced that the creature is coming for them. As strange things begin happening around the house, Amelia starts losing sleep and becoming increasingly unstable. What initially seems like Samuel’s imagination starts feeling much more real as the presence of the Babadook begins taking over their lives. Amelia is eventually forced to confront both the creature and the grief she has spent years trying to suppress. By the end, the Babadook becomes something she can’t simply destroy, but something she has to learn to live with and control.
