In October 1898, during timber logging and shaft excavation beneath an ancient redwood grove in Humboldt County, California, a timber crew clearing a collapsed root system broke into a subterranean granite chamber 160 feet underground. At its center stood a single monolithic stone throne measuring 18 feet across, with armrests raised 30 feet above the floor, carved from non-native basalt. While state foresters classified the formation as a sea-cave erosional anomaly, Yurok and Karuk oral traditions spoke of the "first council seat" where the ancient keepers sat before the tall trees took root.
