For more than three decades, investigators had something that many cold cases never have: DNA evidence.
But the DNA had a problem.
It belonged to a man whose identity investigators could not determine.
On November 9, 1993, Randy Gail Sperino was last seen alive in Granite City, Illinois, getting into an older dark-colored pickup truck. Hours later, her body was discovered in a rural area.
Investigators recovered biological evidence and developed a male DNA profile. The profile was entered into CODIS, but no match was found.
The case remained unsolved for decades.
Then, in May 2025, investigators sent evidence to Othram for advanced DNA testing. A much more comprehensive genetic profile was developed, allowing forensic genetic genealogy to be used to search for potential relatives and family connections.
That investigation eventually pointed toward Albert L. “Buddy” Zigler.
Investigators then returned to the original case and examined details that had been sitting in the file for decades. More than 2,000 pages of case material were also analyzed with AI-assisted technology to help organize timelines, witness information and potential evidence.
In 2026, investigators obtained a direct DNA comparison that prosecutors say matched Zigler to the male DNA profile recovered from the original evidence.
Zigler was arrested in May 2026 and later indicted on two counts of first-degree murder.
But there is an important distinction: an indictment is not a conviction. As of September 2026, the criminal case remains pending.
This is the story of a murder investigation that lasted 33 years—and of evidence that never disappeared, even when the technology needed to understand it did not yet exist.
