Hi, I’m Rashmi. In today’s Soul of Home Life video, I’m taking you through how we prepare and celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in our village in coastal Karnataka — with traditional food, family moments and our village temple celebration. The previous evening, Maami and I walked through the paddy fields to Ponnakka’s home to collect fresh jackfruit leaves for Kotte Kadubu, a traditional steamed idli prepared in handmade jackfruit-leaf cups. Back home, we washed the leaves, ground the rice and urad dal batter, and left it to ferment overnight. The next morning was Ganesh Chaturthi. While our village welcomed Ganpati in a procession, I prepared Rava Laddu at home. Later, Maami and I made the jackfruit-leaf cups, steamed Kotte Kadubu and prepared Kadle Gassi, a coconut-based chickpea curry. Ponnakka joined us for breakfast, and later we all went to the village temple for the Ganesh Chaturthi puja and community lunch. For us, festivals are not only about food or rituals. They are also about preparing together, sharing a meal and spending time with the people around us. ❤️ 1. Kotte Kadubu / Kottige Jackfruit Leaf Idli / Steamed Rice & Lentil Cakes Ingredients: Fresh jackfruit leaves – 35–40 White dosa rice – 3 cups White boiled rice – 2 cups Split and dehusked black gram (Urad dal) – 1 cup Cooked rice – 2 cups Salt – to taste Water – as needed Coconut-leaf midribs – for securing the leaves Method: Soak the dosa rice and boiled rice together for 6–7 hours. Soak the urad dal separately. Grind the urad dal into a smooth batter. Grind the rice with cooked rice into a slightly coarse batter. Mix both batters, add salt and leave covered overnight to ferment. Arrange four jackfruit leaves in overlapping pairs and secure them with thin coconut-leaf midribs. Fold and pin the corners firmly to form a cup so the batter does not leak. Pour in the fermented batter and steam for about 25–30 minutes. Remove from the steamer and serve hot. 2. Kadle Gassi / Kadale Gassi Traditional Chickpea Curry / Chana Curry Ingredients: Chickpeas – 2 cups Potatoes – 3 Onions – 2 Garlic – 3–4 cloves Fresh coconut – 1 Coriander seeds – 2 tbsp Cumin seeds – 1 tbsp Fenugreek seeds – ¼ tsp Black pepper – ½ tbsp Dry red chillies – 12 Tamarind – as needed Turmeric powder – ½ tsp Salt – to taste Oil – 2 tbsp Mustard seeds – 1 tsp Split and dehusked black gram (Urad dal) – 1 tsp Curry leaves – 4–5 sprigs Method: Soak the chickpeas overnight and cook until soft. Cook the chopped potatoes with turmeric and salt until tender. Heat a little oil and roast onion, garlic, coriander seeds, cumin, fenugreek, black pepper and dry red chillies. Add coconut and turmeric, lightly roast and allow to cool. Grind with tamarind and a little water into a smooth masala. Add the masala to the cooked chickpeas and potatoes. Add water as needed and bring to a boil. Temper with oil, mustard seeds, urad dal, red chilli and curry leaves. Pour over the curry and let it rest. 3. Rava Laddu Rava Ladoo / Suji Ladoo / Rave Unde / Semolina Ladoo Ingredients: Rava (semolina) – 2 cups Fresh grated coconut – 1 cup Powdered sugar – ¾ cup Hot milk – 1 cup Ghee – ½ cup Cardamom powder – ½ tbsp Chopped cashews – ½ cup Raisins – ½ cup Method: Heat ghee and lightly roast the cashews and raisins. Keep aside. In the same pan, roast the rava on low heat until aromatic. Add coconut and roast for another 2–3 minutes. Let it cool slightly, then mix in powdered sugar, cardamom, cashews and raisins. Add hot milk little by little until the mixture holds together. Shape into laddus while warm and allow them to cool.
