THE HISTORY OF MONSTER — The $60B Energy Drink Accused of Being Evil
In 2014, a strange theory exploded across the internet: the three green claw marks in the Monster Energy logo supposedly represented 666.
The claim was false. But the story behind it reveals something far more interesting.
Monster did not begin as the giant energy-drink company we know today. Its roots trace back to Hansen Natural, a much quieter beverage business built around juices, natural sodas and alternative drinks.
Then, in 2002, Hansen launched Monster Energy.
With an oversized 16-ounce can, black packaging, green claw marks, aggressive branding and a strategy built around extreme sports, motorsports, gaming and rebellion, Monster chose to become something completely different from a traditional beverage brand.
And it worked.
But success brought new problems: lawsuits, regulatory scrutiny, questions about caffeine and young consumers, and a growing controversy surrounding the image the company had deliberately created.
Then came another dramatic reversal.
In 2012, Hansen Natural became Monster Beverage Corporation.
In 2014, Coca-Cola announced a long-term strategic partnership with Monster, eventually investing billions of dollars and helping transform Monster's global distribution power.
What began as a challenger to Red Bull became a massive beverage business worth tens of billions of dollars.
So how did a company rooted in juice become Monster?
Why did millions of people believe the 666 theory?
And what does that controversy reveal about the power of branding?
This is the history of Monster Energy — a story about branding, rebellion, controversy, distribution, and the business strategy that turned an energy drink into a global identity.
