Tonight we discuss how cylinders are generated from a curve, C, such that all lines equal and parallel to a given line, L, the "generator", intersect C to generate the cylinder. We start working on Surfaces of Revolution, and creating the conceptual understanding from Riemann Series. The GRE book calls this material "Calculus II", so... your mileage may vary. 0:00 - Startup 7:20 - Intro 9:39 - Beyond Right-Circular Cylinders 33:40 - Example: Creating a Parabolic Cylinder 1:03:20 - BREAK TIME w/ Tai Chi 1:25:35 - Back to work: Surfaces of Revolution 2:05:30 - BREAK TIME 2:11:35 - Back to work: Revolving curves about axes 2:42:38 - Outro This video series is dealing with the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), an oft-used requirement for graduate school admissions. The book we are using is: Cracking the GRE: Math Test, 2nd Edition, Princeton Review, 2002. I used this for my GRE exam in 2005. It's a fun look back, as well as a source of examples & exercises. Generally, I will teach the topic, work on the examples, and complete examples both in the "proper" mathematical way, and in the "test-taking" way.
