Wawrinka's Last Match — Basel Said Goodbye to Its Champion

Wawrinka's Last Match — Basel Said Goodbye to Its Champion Stan Wawrinka played the final match of his career on Tuesday night at the Swiss Indoors in Basel, losing 7-5, 7-6(2) to eighth seed Jiri Lehecka in front of his home crowd. The 41-year-old walks away after 24 years as a professional with 590 tour-level wins, 16 titles, a career-high ranking of world No. 3, and three Grand Slam titles — each won by beating the reigning world No. 1 in the final. This is the story of the late bloomer who conquered Melbourne, Paris and New York, the Olympic doubles gold and Davis Cup triumph he shared with Roger Federer, and the one-handed backhand that defined an era.
