Central Oregon Aspens Dying!

There is a massive amount of aspen die off in our central oregon community that is due to the American Hornet Moth. This pest, getting it's name from its uncanny resemblance to a hornet, is stealthily destroying hundreds of Aspens, willows, and other populous trees every year. Usually by the time it's discovered it is too late as the tree cannot recover. The larval life cycle of the moth bores through the lower trunk and basal (root crown) area that disrupt the nutrient and water resource cycling of the tree, killing it in many cases. This boring also severely weakens the base of the tree as it hollows out the critical structural integrity of the tree leaving it highly susceptible to wind throw.
