In this video, we uncover the true story behind Batman's Tumbler — the $250,000 Batmobile from Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy that Jay Leno got to drive on his show. Unlike every previous Batmobile in film history, the Tumbler was not built on an existing car chassis. Production designer Nathan Crowley designed it by kitbashing toy cars from Toys R Us in Nolan's two-car garage, and special effects supervisor Chris Corbould's team in the UK built every component from scratch — a custom tubular steel space frame, NASCAR-spec rear axles, reversed stub axles, and a Chevy 350 ZZ3 V8 engine. The first prototype cost between $500,000 and $1,000,000. Seven were built for Batman Begins alone, and stunt driver George Cottle destroyed four of them. We cover the full engineering breakdown, the infamous drunk driver incident in Chicago, Jay Leno's actual driving experience, and how Warner Bros. is now selling ten official replicas at $2.99 million each.
